ROBERT EASSON STOVEL

Feb 23, 1951 – Mar 31, 1989

The Rob Stovel Foundation was formed in 2018 in loving memory of Robert Easson Stovel. He was a caring soul with a zest for life like no other. With his large heart and joyful personality, Rob looked to bring positive change to others’ lives, whether it be his family, friends, or complete strangers. Throughout his life, he was heavily focused on community and social work, and dedicated to supporting AIDS organizations to help fight the stigma and obstacles individuals within the community face.

Since Rob’s passing in 1989 following a long battle with AIDS, The Rob Stovel Foundation was formed to honour his legacy as a son, brother, and uncle. We are dedicated to doing our part to follow in his philanthropic footsteps, allocating all donated funds efficiently to causes that encourage and enable the best in humanity. To maximize our support efforts, we ensure that all administrative costs are covered privately and not by the Foundation, allowing every penny we receive by our donors to go directly to the charities we love and support!

What was Rob's personality like?

Originally born in Ottawa, Rob moved to Toronto in the late 50’s when he was just 10 or 11 and was the youngest of 3 boys. He was outgoing, friendly, and happy but serious when it was needed. Rob always knew how to bring a smile to the faces of those around him.

What did he like to do in his spare time?

Rob liked to go out with friends, and he lived a very active social life. He had friends everywhere and made friends very easily. He taught ESL for many years in Toronto through Seneca and volunteered teaching summer school. On weekends, he would take his students camping and to the movies. Rob loved camping and the outdoors.

Did he like to travel?

He would visit his brother in Ottawa (and even helped them move), but loved spending Christmas in Toronto. Every year, he would leave on Boxing Day and go to warm destinations; he used to visit his step mother in Myrtle Beach often, and one time went to Switzerland for Grade 13, where he almost missed his brother Joe and Susan’s wedding.

What extracurricular activities did he like to do?

Rob was a movie buff, and would go to see lots of movies and musicals regularly. He liked to swim, was a real foodie and loved to go out to eat at various restaurants around the city.

Favourite memory of him?

He was always there for the family when they needed him; he helped his brother Joe and Susan move, and was always reliable.
